The QTU’s campaign to secure increased funding for public education in the next state budget has stepped up a gear with the publication of the QTU State Budget Priorities Update.

The document, which updates the QTU budget submission published last year, has been provided to members of state parliament, the latest move in the QTU 2009-2010 state budget campaign.

The campaign was launched at July State Council, the earliest that a funding campaign has been launched, providing an opportunity for a more strategic approach.

One aspect of this is the decision not to produce a new “omnibus” budget submission. Instead the strategy will be built around the same priorities identified in our 2008-09 QTU Budget Submission, which will continue to provide a base document for the campaign, supplemented by the State Budget Priorities Update and a series of fact sheets and information documents to be released on an on-going basis.

This will allow us to build on the campaigning done throughout 2008 on issues such as needs-based funding and teacher housing, to sustain public and media interest in the campaign priorities, to highlight specific issues, to link information directly to campaign activities and to produce documents that are specific to a particular geographical area or audience.

The budget campaign strategy will have the following elements:

  • political lobbying
  • research program
  • member engagement and activity
  • community engagement and media work.

The update provides information on the outcomes of the 2008-09 state budget in relation to the priorities set out by the QTU and examines and updates data on state and federal funding for education.
