Is that true or did you read it in The Courier-Mail?

The article in today's edition of The Courier-Mail (Wednesday, 22 October) covering the complex schools resourcing campaign is both wildly sensationalist and inaccurate.

The final paragraph of the article represents an outrageous slur by the newspaper on parents in the Logan-Albert Beaudesert region.

No-one from the QTU has ever commented, as falsely claimed in the article, that “parents of some Logan/Beaudesert region students spoke little English and were not involved enough in their children’s education”. To print such nonsense demonstrates nothing more than the prejudices of the newspaper.

The fact is that parents of students in the area have been overwhelmingly supportive of their local teachers’ campaign for more funding for schools in the area, and have a far deeper understanding of the benefit of needs-based funding than The Courier-Mail’s education reporter. QTU members have been running information stalls about the Meeting the Challenge campaign at local markets, and have met with nothing but support from the local community.

The article’s somewhat hysterical focus on school-based violence and suspensions misses the main point of the campaign – QTU members are fighting for fair resources for complex schools so that all students can do their very best in the “smart state”
