To the Editor

The editorial in today's edition of The Courier-Mail rightly makes the point that "governments, principals and teachers can do only so much" to address violence among young people. However, one point was missed: what role does media sensationalism play in bringing potentially gratifying public attention to the perpetrators of poor behaviour? In this age of celebrity worship - whether celebrity is earned through achievement or notoriety - it is time to seriously consider and answer that question.
