Temporary Teachers

  • The Department may engage a teacher in a temporary capacity to fill a temporary vacancy in a school of 5 days or more in duration.
  • Normally temporary engagements occur to replace teachers who have taken a period of leave.
  • As a consequence of the Department of Education and Training Teachers’ Certified Agreement 2010 temporary teachers now have:
    • pro-rata payment over the summer vacation period (subject to particular conditions)
    • Conversion to permanency after 3 years continuous service
    • Payment for required attendance at student free days; and
    • Improved access to school and district professional development
  • Teachers can end a temporary engagement early
    • PROVIDED they provide two weeks notice to the Department of Education that they intend to end the engagement.
  • Conversely the Department of Education and Training can cease a temporary engagement at any time,
    • HOWEVER, their current practice is to give at least one weeks notice of the termination of the temporary engagement.
