Temporary Teachers
- The Department may engage a teacher in a temporary capacity to fill a temporary vacancy in a school of 5 days or more in duration.
- Normally temporary engagements occur to replace teachers who have taken a period of leave.
- As a consequence of the Department of Education and Training Teachers’ Certified Agreement 2010 temporary teachers now have:
- pro-rata payment over the summer vacation period (subject to particular conditions)
- Conversion to permanency after 3 years continuous service
- Payment for required attendance at student free days; and
- Improved access to school and district professional development
- Teachers can end a temporary engagement early
- PROVIDED they provide two weeks notice to the Department of Education that they intend to end the engagement.
- Conversely the Department of Education and Training can cease a temporary engagement at any time,
- HOWEVER, their current practice is to give at least one weeks notice of the termination of the temporary engagement.

Condolences to US community
Tragic news continues to come from Moore, Oklahoma, where young children have died at Plaza Towers Elementary School, which was in the direct path of a tornado. As President Barack Obama has said, these children lost their lives in one of the safest places they knew – their school. The thoughts of 44,000 QTU members are with the devastated community.
