Labour Day – QTU Proud!
The QTU has had a strong and proud presence at Queensland Labour Day celebrations since 1891, when the first Labour Day commemoration occurred. QTU members can be proud of our many and varied achievements throughout our union’s history and are encouraged to join with other QTU members, and the wider union movement, to celebrate this Labour Day.
This Labour Day provides a unique opportunity for Queenslanders to send a strong and clear message to the Turnbull government given the current attack on Australian workers and families with the unprecedented cuts to penalty rates. It is important to have a large attendance to send the important message about decency and fairness in every workplace.
The Brisbane Labour Day March and festival is on Monday 1 May. The march will begin at 10.00am sharp. Members need to assemble by 9.30am at the corner of Wharf and Turbot Street, Spring Hill. The march concludes at the Brisbane Show Grounds with festivities for the whole family. There will be children’s rides, live music and a barbecue.
QTU members are invited to march behind our member-group specific banners at the Brisbane march if they wish; Educational Leaders, Women, TAFE and LGBTIQ+ Pride.
Please encourage QTU members to bring family and friends to join in the fun at the Labour Day celebrations occurring across the state. A summary of the celebrations state-wide are detailed below. Further details are available on the QTU website or The Queensland Council of Unions' website.

QTU stands in solidarity
The Queensland Teachers’ Union wishes to express its shock at the killing of 17 people at the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, and stands in solidarity with the many brave teachers who risked their own lives to protect the students in their care.
These horrific events reveal the deep commitment and bravery of members of our profession under the most extreme of circumstances, and we are proud to stand with them at this terrible time.QTU, 16 Feb 2018
