Professional reading update - educational journals of interest

In the next few instalments of this column we will identify a variety of educational journals that may be of interest to members. The QTU Library subscribes to all of the journals listed.

Review of Educational Research

This is the official journal of the American Educational Research Association, published quarterly. The articles are scholarly, directed at an academic audience, and some make for very heavy going for readers who are not up with the latest academic theories and jargon. Nonetheless, the status of this journal makes it worth knowing about. Of particular interest are the meta-analyses and reviews of the literature. Examples of recent review articles have included the impact of induction and mentoring programs for beginning teachers, the impact of technology on learning and the effects of extending the school day or school year.

Education Review

A monthly journal published by APN Educational Media in cooperation with the Australian College of Educators, ACARA and AITSL, all of which have pages devoted to their concerns. It provides a good summary of developments in the schooling sector and features opinion pieces from commentators across a range of perspectives..

Campus Review

Another APN publication (and it looks so similar to Education Review in design and layout that it is hard to tell them apart). Campus Review focuses on the VET and higher education sectors and, like Education Review, provides a good summary of developments and a variety of opinion pieces. Published fortnightly, it is required reading for TAFE teachers with an interest in VET policy debates.

Australian Educator

This quarterly is produced by the Australian Education Union and distributed to all AEU members. It provides an overview of educational issues from a teacher and teacher union perspective. Articles are relatively short, newsy and accessible. It provides an excellent national complement to the state-focused Queensland Teachers’ Journal.

The Australian TAFE Teacher

The name really tells the story of this quarterly AEU publication – the most authoritative source for a TAFE perspective on the current VET policy debates.

Remember to record your professional reading for the purposes of continuing professional development.
