Recent events in our state, the nation and around the world have highlighted the plight of refugees and people seeking asylum resulting in an outpouring of positivity.
In response to calls from members to lead the voice of teachers, principals and education support workers on this issue, the Queensland Teachers’ Union (QTU) and Independent Education Union – Queensland and Northern Territory Branch (IEUQNT) have jointly created a new special interest group for members of our respective unions: Teachers for Refugees and People Seeking Asylum (TRAPSA).
Schools, and everyone who works in them, play a vital role in supporting refugees, people seeking asylum and people from a refugee or asylum seeker background. The Teachers for Refugees and People Seeking Asylum special interest group aims to provide a focus for members wishing to play their part in this global movement of welcome.
The terms of reference for TRAPSA is available here.
Check back regularly to this page and the events page on this website for updates on meetings and activities of TRAPSA and news on events being organised and/or supported by the IEUQNT and QTU which you are invited to attend.
#Kids off Nauru Campaign
In Brisbane, more than 200 people, including dozens of teachers from Brisbane schools. Speakers included: Kagi, a refugee who spoke of her lived experience; Gabby, a “whistle-blower” teacher who worked on Nauru, two young refugee girls (and their father); Jessica Walker – Deputy Principal at Yeronga SHS and winner of the 2018 QCT Award for Excellence in Teaching in Community Engagement; Ros McLennan, General Secretary of the Queensland Council of Unions; and the awesome Phil Monsour, who played some great music to lift our spirits, attended a rally on 20 November 2018. While this is a community campaign involving hundreds of organisations, there is no doubt that action by teachers and principals, led by their unions, has elevated the issue in the public consciousness.
