Instrumental Music Bulletin - Term 3, 2022, 13 July 2022
Instrumental Music MOA
After fortnightly meetings through floods and illness, two different Department of Education (DoE) negotiation teams, multiple reports to Executive and State Council, and countless emails, the Instrumental Music Memorandum of Agreement (IM MOA) has been finalised. The IM MOA aims to caputure the matters identified in the 2019 Joint Communiqué, and much of the information is copied verbatim. However, there are some new elements that deserve extra attention.
Rest pause
Instrumental music instructors and teachers (IMITs) will now be entitled to an additional paid rest pause for every three hours worked. These breaks should be timetabled in outside of any travel time (this is also the case for lunch breaks).
Hours of duty
The rostered duty hours of an IMIT remain between 8am-4pm as a default, however through negotiation with the school principal and the LCC, IMITs can choose to begin their day one hour before the start of the school day. For example, at a school which starts at 8.30am, you could take rehearsals from 7.30am without breaching your conditions. It is important to note that IMITs hold all of the power in this regard and cannot be required to begin before 8am. Additionally, should IMITs choose to start at 7.30am, the LCC needs to consider how best to provide appropriate safety and communication methods should there be absences or urgent safety issues. Additionally, should the day start earlier, it will finish earlier, as there has been no change to the maximum rostered duty time of seven hours.
Additionally, there have been commitments to:
- classes being grouped in accordance with DoE’s Inclusive Education Policy
- inclusion of motor vehicle allowances
- support for instrumental music instructors upgrading their qualifications.
Joint Communiqué
The QTU is currently working with the DoE on a Joint Communiqué, to provide additional clarity regarding the updated MOA. This includes ensuring that the option to change start times remains entirely the choice of the IMIT.
EB10 update
The QTU has received an offer that has been endorsed by Executive. You can read more in the most recent Newsflash.
IMRC
The next Instrumental Music Reference Committee (IMRC) meeting is scheduled to take place on Thursday 28 July (Week 3). If you have matters that need discussing, you should make contact with your representatives.
Welcome back Dr Craig Wood
As of last week, my time as the acting officer responsible for instrumental music has come to an end. I’d like to welcome back Craig and thank him for trusting me in his seat. I am now acting Women’s and Social Welfare Issues Officer, standing in for Penny Spalding, who is on leave for the remainder of the year. I’d like to thank all the IMITs who I have been able to support and assure you that Craig has any outstanding matters in hand.
I hope (for everyone’s sake) that you have a boring rest of the year, I think we could all use some precendented times!
