Teacher reskilling program – ITD
This program is recognised as legitimate professional development by the Department of Education and Queensland College of Teachers. As such, it is appropriate to apply for funding through your normal school professional development processes.
Venue change – these courses will be delivered from Bremer State High School during Term 3 due to COVID-19 restrictions at other venues.
Staff from Springfield Tech Centre have been training adults in a variety of practical courses for the past 5 years. Courses are delivered by facilitators with a range of industry and school experience.
Courses offered include Metal and Woodwork, Timber Machining, Turning Machining Metal and MIG Welding classes which are delivered on weekends to ensure participants are able to access the practical school based facilities.
Springfield Tech Centre take customer service very seriously and understand that people who are learning new skills. Some participants have specific needs and our facilitators are happy to adjust their training to accommodate those needs.
Introductory Metalwork and Woodwork skills for Teachers
These classes are designed for teachers who have an interest in teaching junior ITD [Industrial Technology and Design]. It is a practical subject that covers a range of timber joints often used in ITD. Classes are kept small with a maximum of 10 to ensure everyone has plenty of help. This workshop will be presented by an experienced ITD teacher who teaches ITD full time.
These classes are designed for teachers who have an interest in teaching junior ITD or are teaching the subject and would like to improve their sheet metal skills. It is a practical subject that covers producing items from sheet metal. These classes are kept small with a maximum of 10 to ensure everyone has plenty of help. You will learn basic skills and move onto manufacturing a toolbox similar to what a year 11 student would make. The training will be run by an experienced ITD teacher who teaches ITD full time.
Advanced Metal and Woodwork skills for Teachers
Timber Machining classes
These classes are designed to give participants skills in using a variety of woodworking machinery. This course will have participants using a thicknesser, mitre saw, table saw, band saw and router. You will be machining rough sawn pine and producing all the components of an Adirondack chair. As this is a high-risk subject and we want to ensure you are safe, we will teach you how to safely use the equipment therefore will conduct these classes with a maximum of 12 participants and will be presented by 2 experienced ITD teachers.
Turning Machining Metal classes
These classes are for teachers who have some experience in teaching ITD and want to teach machining. This course is presented by an experienced tradesperson with many years’ experience in machining and has also taught machining to many schools over the years. These classes are very small with only 4 participants attending, to ensure you get the most out of this course. Participants will turn, taper, Knurl and cut a thread with the lathe and use the mill to face and cut grooves. The end result will be a soft hammer or meat mallet.
MIG Welding classes
These classes are for teachers who want to learn to MIG weld. This course covers setting up the machine and running sound welds on 3mm plate steel. We only conduct this class with 6 participants to ensure safety and provide you with plenty of help. These classes are facilitated by an experienced tradesperson who works in the industry and has plenty of experience teaching welding.
