Class allocation
As schools prepare for a new year, we’ve been receiving questions about class allocations and the processes associated with deciding who teaches what year level and subjects in 2020.
The allocation of teachers to classes is at the principal’s discretion - they have the overall responsibility for the good order and management of the school and its day to day operations.
When allocating teachers to classes, their qualifications and experience should be taken into account.
While it is desirable that teachers work within their areas of expertise, the size of the state and the growing enrolments in Queensland state schools may mean this is cannot always be achieved. If a teacher is being requested to teach outside of their areas of experience, expertise or qualifications, this should be accompanied by a plan of support for their personal and professional development. It is desirable that these conversations take place as part of the annual performance review process before the change is made.
Allocations should also take into account the need to have classes below or at the class size targets as required by the certified agreement. Classes above these targets can only occur in exceptional circumstances.
In primary and special schools, the specialists subjects of music, PE and languages should continue to be provided in accordance with the allocative model and the need to provide the award entitlement to NCT.
Should you have any questions regarding class allocations for 2020, you should initially discuss the issue with your school’s Union Rep, the relevant head of program, or school leader. If you require any further assistance, please contact your Organiser.
