Embedding Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander perspectives is a year-round job
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander perspectives should be embedded within schools from the bottom up and should be seen growing throughout the school - don't just leave it to occasional events like NAIDOC week.
Some schools across Queensland are doing this. They are embedding Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander perspectives throughout their school through murals, acknowledgement signs and use of the local language in school newsletters and posters. They are using their Indigenous community in the school through parent groups, Adopt-an-Elder and homework programs and, most importantly, they have embedded Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander perspectives throughout their curriculum and use NAIDOC week as a celebration, not as the only week they do anything Indigenous.
