TAFE Queensland’s modern award – further delays
As you are no doubt aware, the QTU has been involved in an award modernisation process for members employed by TAFE Queensland. The process has taken many months, and we are now in the final stages. A consent position has been reached, and we expect the modern award will be made in the coming weeks. We had hoped it would be made at today’s Queensland Industrial Relations Commission (QIRC) hearing, however last minute changes provided by TAFE Queensland after close of business yesterday have led to a further delay. The Union anticipates this new delay will be short – no more than two weeks.
The making of a modern award will enable us to commence the enterprise bargaining process and negotiate a new certified agreement for our (non-CQU) TAFE members, as the current Newman-era industrial relations legislation requires a modern award be made before bargaining can commence. The existing TAFE agreement expired in 2013 and it is through the certified agreement negotiations that pay rises are usually delivered.
Notwithstanding today’s delay, the QTU is preparing for EB and will be ready to commence bargaining for TAFE Queensland members as soon as the modern award is made.
For CQU, the situation is different. The CQU agreement remains valid until 30 June 2018, or until such time as a replacement enterprise agreement is negotiated. The QTU is keen to retain consistent working conditions for our members, whether they be employed by TAFE Queensland or CQU. We are also aware that a number of our CQU members are keen to commence negotiating a replacement agreement.
While we have ideas about what to include in the QTU’s log of claims, we’re keen to hear from our members. As always, our aim is to achieve significant improvements for the majority of members.
We encourage you to hold a workplace meeting to enable members to discuss suggested inclusions. This should be done as soon as possible, so we can begin bargaining as soon as the award is modernised.
