2 May 2018
Dear QTU TAFE/CQU members,
I hope 2018 is progressing well in your area of TAFE Queensland and Central Queensland University. The QTU’s TAFE Organiser, David Terauds, is on long service leave until 9 July, so I am acting in the role, taking responsibility for working with all QTU members employed by TAFE Queensland (TAFE) and Central Queensland University (CQU). My background is as an electrical TAFE teacher in Brisbane and I have been on QTU TAFE Council for over ten years, TAFE Executive for six years and QTU Executive for four years. I will be back in front of a class when my stint at the QTU ends later in the year.
This year will continue to be action-packed in terms of the work the QTU is doing with members. The review of the Team Leader position is proceeding, with myself and Kevin Bates, our President, to finalise our position on this matter. In addition, Thalia Edmonds, our Industrial Advocate, and I will be developing a process to initialise consultation with members to collect information and concerns as we head towards another enterprise bargaining process. In addition to this, I will be publishing TAFE Union News fortnightly to keep everyone informed of what is occurring in TAFE and CQU, with a focus on developing further understanding of your conditions of employment.
I am keen to make sure that, as your QTU Organiser, the conditions you are employed under are adhered too, in line with your respective awards and agreements. Please do not hesitate to contact me on my mobile (0409 348 339), at the office (3512 9000) or via email at email@example.com if you have any questions, concerns or require assistance.
I would encourage Union Reps to speak with new teachers and encourage them to join the QTU, so we are able to assist them with their very important role in VET education. The certified agreement contains a “union encouragement” clause, which recognises the importance of teachers being afford the opportunity to join our exceptional Union. I’d also suggest that you insist that your institute’s handbook for new staff includes information about becoming a member of the QTU. If you would like me to provide some words to include in your booklet, please make contact me as I am happy to do so.
Please do not forget Labour Day is just around the corner. Please join your colleagues in marching and representing your Union on the day. Please follow the link for information about your region.
No doubt a myriad of other matters will be managed by the QTU and its members across professional, legal and industrial spheres during 2018. I look forward to working with you for the next three months.
I have provided below a list of links which I thought might be useful to you.
