Instrumental music teachers support MOA but continue the fight for additional leave provisions
The two recent ballots that instrumental music teachers/instructors have supported are a clear indication to the Department of Education that there is an urgent need to address the matter of hours of instrumental teachers’/instructors’ work.
Just as importantly, the ballots have highlighted the working conditions of instrumental music teachers/instructors at the local level.
The work-to-rule, as overwhelmingly supported in the two ballots, is clear. No teacher should be directed to commence rehearsals prior to 8:00am, and rehearsals must conclude by 4:00pm.
There should be no rehearsals during an instrumental music teacher/instructor’s meal break because the award entitles teachers to an uninterrupted meal break of 45 minutes.
The ballots have highlighted the urgent need for additional leave provisions that recognise instrumental music teachers/instructors’s work outside of hours, conducting performances, attending camps, and attending meetings. Additional leave provisions will be a priority when the QTU begins enterprise bargaining negotiations in 2019.
What happens next?
The initial ballot for a work-to-rule directive was overwhelmingly supported, with 93 per cent of votes in favour of the directive. The second ballot saw 96 per cent of ballots cast in favour of the QTU Executive’s revised recommendations.
The QTU will be sending an additional bulletin at the beginning of the 2019 school year, reminding you of the work-to-rule directive and explaining what the directive means at the local level.
The QTU will also be sending a separate update to all state school, state high school, and state college principals, ensuring that they are aware that you have been directed to work-to-rule by the QTU. The QTU will support any member who is directed to attend rehearsals outside of rostered duty time or are unable to access meal breaks.
The second ballot also recommended that the QTU sign the replacement memorandum of agreement to secure the enhanced provisions that had been negotiated. A copy of the revised MOA will be available on the QTU website and a separate bulletin will be distributed noting the enhanced conditions.
Finally, as per the recommendations of Executive’s revised ballot, the QTU will be seeking additional leave provisions in EB9, to be negotiated in the first half of the 2019 school year.
