Labour Day – Come join the celebration
Queensland Teachers' Journal, Vol 124 No 2, 15 March 2019, page no. 16
Labour Day has a rich and colourful history across Queensland, and in 2019 it is shaping up to be a long weekend filled with union pride and family friendly celebrations.
This year, the QTU celebrates its 130th year, so why not come along and celebrate at one of the many Labour Day events taking place in most major regional centres and throughout the south-east corner.
The QTU has a long, proud and strong history of collective strength, in protecting public education for all Queensland students and the conditions of teachers, and importantly, standing in solidarity with other unions and workers. Labour Day is a great opportunity to join together in a welcoming environment, to march proudly with your union, family and friends, and to be #unionproud.
The Labour Day theme is Change the Rules, recognising the successful national campaign of our peak body, the ACTU. Together with other unions, we will send a strong, united message that we believe that the rules need to change, and that the sustained attacks on working people (such as changes to penalty rates and job security) have no place in modern Australia.
Many members have joined the social media and community campaign by proudly wearing their union and/or Change the Rules t-shirts every Saturday in the lead up to the federal election with the hash tag #changetherules. Nationwide we are challenging the ridiculous attempts by conservative forces to dismiss union members as thugs, and prompt community conversation about union pride and the real and powerful work of unions. And, there is no better way than standing proud with your union on Labour Day.
So, come. Join in the fun and help us celebrate! See you there.
Up to date details and information can found on the QTU website and will be communicated to members closer to the long weekend (4-6 May) as they become available.
