Fair Funding Now! National Week of Action
Queensland Teachers' Journal, Vol 123 No 7, 5 October 2018, page no. 16
Teachers, principals and parents across the state took park in a range of activities in early September as part of the Fair Funding Now! National Week of Action.
We kicked the week off with a tweet-a-thon, which resulted in #FairFundingNow trending in each state and territory with more than 17,000 tweets on the night, reaching just over 400,000 people.
We continued on with direct parent engagement outside a number of schools across the state, talking to parents about the need for a fair federal funding system for all schools and signing up more supporters.
Our activist teams across the state also generated a range of other community engagement activities, including:
- market stalls at the Beenleigh Show, Jimboomba Markets, Redcliffe Markets, and the Old Petrie Markets
- presentations to local P&C meetings across the state
- Fair Funding Now! Fashions On the Field at the Thangool Races in the electorate of Flynn
- the awesome FFN BBQ team, who took out 3rd place at the Emerald Low & Slow BBQ cooking competition.
The week culminated with Fair Funding Now! sponsorship of the Queensland P&Cs Conference, where our awesome volunteers had more than 200 conversations with local P&C Executive members, who signed up as a supporters of the campaign and took a kit back for their next meeting. They were also briefed on simple questions they can ask of their federal MP at their next interaction.
We are building a strong network of supporters and volunteers right across the state, with just under four and a half thousand supporters now signed up in Queensland. With the prospect of an early election diminished with the change in Prime Minister, we will continue to grow stronger and have more conversations across the community.
Our next big mobilisation will be in early November, as we plan local letterboxing and doorknocking events across the state.
