Chemical management procedures

Members have raised ChemWatch Chemical Management System and associated procedures expected of schools, with the QTU.

We have raised this matter formally with the department. An urgent review of this system of work, ensuring active and direct consultation with experienced Science teachers and Science Heads of Department, needs to occur. In the meantime, the June deadline needs to be substantially extended or better still, the expectation should be put on hold.

Processes and procedures being delivered to schools through Central Office, are creating unfunded and unresourced workload burdens for school leaders and teachers.

The QTU maintains that the Chemical Management Procedure – ChemWatch is not suitable for implementation in schools in its current format.

Changes to systems of work without appropriate levels of consultation, including examining the workload implications is not a safe system of work and additionally does not meet the duty to consult.
