Gandu Jarjum : role of the committee
Gandu Jarjum
- is a forum providing an Indigenous voice in the QTU;
- coordinates QTU representation and advocacy on Department of Education committees and working groups on Indigenous education;
- develops submissions on Indigenous issues to the Department of Education, State and Commonwealth Governments, and other bodies;
- oversees the development of QTU Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Education Policy;
- promotes Indigenous teacher networks;
- provides opportunities to Indigenous QTU members for professional and industrial relations development;
- sends Indigenous QTU members to participate in state, national and international conferences on Indigenous issues;
- maintains links with other organisations (e.g. Australians for Native Title and Reconciliation, the Aboriginal Reconciliation Council, Brisbane Council of Elders);
- has Indigenous representatives on the national AEU Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Education and AEU TAFE Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Education Committees;
- sponsors cross-cultural and anti-racism seminars for teachers;
- participates in activities such as NAIDOC week and National Sorry Day.

Apology
The QTU formally apologises to Aboriginal communities and Torres Strait Islander communities for the role that educators and schools had in the removal of Aboriginal children and Torres Strait Islander children from their families and communities and their subsequent mistreatment. The QTU formally acknowledges and apologises for the part played by teachers and schools in the removal of Aboriginal children and Torres Strait Islander children from their families and their subsequent mistreatment. The QTU recommits itself to continuing to strive for the full recognition of Aboriginal peoples and Torres Strait Islander peoples’ rights especially those relating to land and sea rights.

Gandu Jarjum polo shirt
It is something that can be recognised by all Union members and gives everyone in the Union the opportunity to wear it and stand in solidarity with Aboriginal peoples and Torres Strait Islander peoples and on Aboriginal issues and Torres Strait Islander issues. The artist, Dr Mayrah Yarraga Dreise, a Gamilaraay and Yeeralaraaya woman, was, at the time of formulating the design, a principal, an active unionist and member of Gandu Jarjum. Gandu Jarjum members chose the animals on the shirts from Mayrah's designs to reflect Aboriginal peoples, Torres Strait Islander peoples and the Union.
