Leichhardt Branch joins NQAC
Queensland Teachers' Journal, Vol 126 No 1, 12 February 2021, page no. 4
The recent retirement of Maureen Duffy as Peninsula & North-West Organiser has prompted some changes for members of the QTU’s Leichhardt Branch.
After consultation with members and our regional organiser team, the following resolutions were ratified at State Council on 2 November:
- THAT Council ratify that the Leichhardt Branch be transferred to be the responsibility of the North Queensland Regional Organiser and becomes part of the North Queensland Area Council of the Queensland Teachers Union.
- THAT the first paragraph of 8.3.5 State Accommodation Committee of the QTU Structures, Procedures and Services Policy be amended to read:
- The Committee shall consist of two members each elected by the Peninsula Area Council, three members each elected by the Central Queensland, North Queensland (one from Leichhardt Branch) and South Queensland Area Councils and one member elected by the Wide Bay Area Council.
The north west of the state has always been a challenging place to live and work. In the past, The QTU ensured that members of the Leichhardt Branch were supported with guaranteed positions on the Union’s State Accommodation Committee, and the Regional Organiser would visit the region multiple times per year. The inclusion of the branch in the North Queensland Region will build upon that support.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank Maureen Duffy for her dedication, determination and commitment to all members in the Leichhardt Branch, and to introduce Paul Waters as their new Regional Organiser. Paul has served members in North Queensland for more than four years and is looking forward to working with you in the future.
Paul and I plan to visit Mount Isa during the week of 22 February for a number of workplace visits, and will then attend the Leichhardt Branch AGM on 23 February. We look forward to meeting with members and discussing the new support arrangements for members.
