NAIDOC: Heal Country, Heal our Nation
Queensland Teachers' Journal, Vol 126 No 7, 8 October 2021, page no.23
This year, the QTU celebrated NAIDOC at the Ipswich Family and Cultural NAIDOC celebration, held on 23 September at the Briggs Road Sporting complex. It was a fantastic day, with lots of laughs, Cultural performances, food, badge making and yarns with our Ipswich community.
The NAIDOC 2021 theme – Heal Country! – asks for all Australians to seek greater protections for our lands, our waters, our sacred sites and our cultural heritage from exploitation, desecration, and destruction. NAIDOC 2021 invites everyone to embrace First Nations’ cultural knowledge and understanding of Country as part of Australia’s national heritage.
For generations, First Nations peoples have been calling on governments to introduce stronger measures to recognise and protect Culture and heritage. Sadly, we are still waiting for those strong protections. This year’s theme also seeks substantive institutional, structural, and collaborative reform – something our Elders and communities have been advocating, marching, and fighting for.
