New QTU LGBTIQ+ standing committee
Queensland Teachers' Journal, Vol 126 No 7, 8 October 2021, page no.4
A new QTU standing committee is to be established to oversee the employment, status and conditions of Union members who identify as part of the LGBTIQ+ community and advocate for education, inclusion and advocacy.
The Rainbow/LGBTIQ+ Committee, as it is currently known, was formally ratified by the QTU's State Council at its meeting on 28 August. It has arisen through the active engagement and ongoing issues experienced by our QTU members who are part of the LGBTIQ+ community, and the Union’s ongoing support for students with diverse sexualities and gender identities.
The committee will comprise of the chair and 15 additional members who identify as part of the LGBTIQ+ community, one of whom will be a First Nations person where one nominates. One of the positions will also be a dedicated TAFE position, where a person working in TAFE nominates.
As the Union Officer who will provide secretariat support for the committee, I am excited that this issue of the Journal contains a notice for 15 nominations, which open on 8 October and close at midday on 1 November. If valid nominations exceed vacancies, a ballot will take place at QTU State Council.
