WWAM: QTU workload reduction campaign
Queensland Teachers' Journal, Vol 125 No 7, 2 October 2020, page no.13
In his first Journal article of 2020, QTU General Secretary Graham Moloney discussed six sources of workload, one of which is individual actions.
To be clear, we know that systems and schools need to change to reduce your workload. But individual change can also help. We know that individuals often default to saying “yes” for the good of their students. However, when that “yes” shifts from being a well-intentioned one-off action intended to help out to becoming an expectation, the resulting incremental workload creep encroaches on personal time that should be quarantined for our families and friends.
August State Council saw the launch of Enough!, a WWAM action designed to highlight the importance of reclaiming work-life balance, which is occurring in tandem with our national campaign against the workload associated with NAPLAN; our state campaign to reduce workload associated with curriculum, reporting, data and reviews; and our support for members exercising work-life balance through exercising their right to disconnect.
In the lead up to our WWAM in November, visit the QTU website and download your own workload reduction Enough! card. Then:
- Think of a small action to reclaim work-life balance that you and your colleagues can support each other with
- Write the action on the back of your Enough! card, and check in with each other.
- Send a photo of your Enough! card to workload@qtu.asn.au
