Part-time teachers and student free days
Monday is now “Know Your Working Conditions” day, a chance to reacquaint yourself with your rights and brush up on the information you need to make the most of the many conditions and benefits the QTU and its members have secured down the decades.
We have received a number of queries from part-time teachers with regard to their obligations when it comes to attending student free days.
All permanent teachers, whether part-time or full-time, must attend all student free days.
The current award states that: “Teachers, heads of program, school leaders, community teachers and assistant teachers are expected to report for a full day of duty on the student free days nominated for professional development activities during the school year, or any other days substituted for such days, or any additional days declared by the Minister as requiring the attendance of all permanent officers. Such employees will be paid in full for the time so worked.”
Where a student free day falls on a non-rostered day, a part-time teacher will be paid an additional five hours for such attendance in the relevant pay period.
