A Labour Day like no other

Labour Day celebrations this weekend
While COVID-19 is changing the way we will celebrate Labour Day across Queensland in 2020, it doesn’t mean we won’t be celebrating! The Labour Day public holiday and long weekend from 2 - 4 May is a long-established way to acknowledge the achievements of our mighty trade union movement and celebrate the wins of working Australians.
The community impact of the pandemic has highlighted the strength and capacity of our movement; ensuring that workers are safe, working creatively to keep Australia moving and ensuring that those who are doing it tough have a safety net. Now more than ever, Australia needs strong unions.
While we will not be physically gathering for marches and family fun days this year, you can tune in to local radio stations across the state to hear union-themed tunes and announcements. The QTU and wider movement will also be moving celebrations to social media, so get involved and share what your Union means to you. Why did you join your Union? Join in, share your great stories of struggles engaged in and wins secured and dig out your old photos. Get ready to share and celebrate!
From 2 - 4 May, you will hear union advertisements and announcements through the following radio stations:
- Cairns - 4CA and Star 102.7
- Townsville – Power 100.7 and Star 106.3
- Mackay - 4MK and Star 10.9
- Rockhampton/Gladstone - 4CC
- Bundaberg/Hervey Bay - 4BU and Hitz 93.9
- Sunshine Coast/Maroochydore - Hot 91.1
- Ipswich/Toowoomba - River - 94.9 (will also reach many Brisbane listeners)
- Gold Coast – Hot Tomato (TBC).
On Monday, why not put on your Union shirt, tune your radio to listen to a day of union songs, and share your photos with us for social media.
In the lead up to Labour Day, why not also record a 30 second video on the significance of Labour Day and send it to the QTU (qtu@qtu.asn.au) for us to share on social media throughout the day.
You can go to the Queensland Unions Labour Day Facebook event to register your interest, or visit www.labourday.org.au to sign up to receive updates.
It’s going to be a different Labour Day in 2020, but we’ll still be celebrating what workers have achieved for the whole community.
Happy Labour Day!
