QTU Reconciliation Plan update – Innovate 2026-2028
Queensland Teachers' Journal, Vol 131 No 3, 22 May 2026, page no.16
Over the past two months, the QTU has been preparing the draft Innovate Reconciliation Action Plan 2026 to 2028.
This process has included consultation with key QTU employees, engagement with all QTU Senior Officers, and feedback on the draft plan provided by Reconciliation Australia.
Our previous RAP processes were often straddling member-facing outcomes and internal organisational culture. We are refocusing our work on the internal organisational culture, as this work will lead to reconciliation forming part of our normal business practices. This in turn should benefit our members and improve our member-facing work.
Although the draft is not ready for publication, significant work has been done to review and refine key deliverables. Part of this process has also been to consider expanding the number of leads with responsibility for overseeing each of the deliverables that fall within areas of their responsibility or influence.
We are also planning our new reporting processes to enable each lead to monitor the implementation of deliverables across each year of the plan. This will ensure greater oversight of progress and allow for timely adjustments where deliverables have not been achieved as planned.
The QTU has also begun consultation with employees about the establishment of an employee RAP working group. This process will be critical in socialising and normalising delivery of reconciliation outcomes through the core business functions and culture of the organisation internally. This step will be critical to ensuring the deliverables set out in the draft Innovate RAP are not simply bolted on to current work or projects but become embedded. This will be important work in ensuring our reconciliation journey as an organisation. It will also complement the member-facing working group and consultation with members of our Gandu Jarjum Committee.
Other activities in which the QTU has engaged in preparation for the confirmation of our revised Innovate RAP include:
- an RAP listening activity undertaken by the Acting General Secretary with our Gandu Jarjum Committee
- attendance of Acting General Secretary at RAP Learning Circle hosted by Reconciliation Australia
- planning of a morning tea with all QTU Officers and other employees based in our Milton office during Reconciliation Week, to provide an opportunity to socialise our planning and preparations for the finalisation of the revised Innovation RAP
- adding RAP deliverables as a standing item on key internal governance meetings so that they are always considered in the internal business processes of the Union.
Once our draft plan is approved and published, the QTU will also conduct all-employee briefings to celebrate the launch and begin the important work of implementing it successfully.
