Keeping active
Queensland Teachers' Journal, Vol 131 No 4, 26 June 2026, page no.32
Socialising is necessary as we age. There is nothing like a belly laugh and friendly talk with friends and relatives, as research has shown that getting out with friends stimulates us both physically and emotionally. This is one reason that the Queensland Retired Teachers Association continues to encourage retired teachers to join with others and learn more about the area we live in, whether it be Brisbane or other parts of our great state.
The Events Committee has organised great activities that help retirees to socialise and learn more about different subjects. These are advertised in the monthly newsletter.
If you have not joined in with QRTA activities, please keep in touch and join the friendly members at the next outing.
It is interesting to learn about our own area or to go travelling and learn more about the world we live in. Some of us have been fortunate enough to have travelled overseas, while others are able to use video and literature to gain knowledge of places near and far.
We now have technology to help us access information about our ancestors and how and why they came to live in this country. Many of us failed to ask our families questions about their lives in years gone by and now have begun research to find the answers and learn more.
Organisations like the Queensland Genealogy Society can guide you to where you can find out about times past. This is one way of solving history mysteries and meeting many like-minded researchers.
If considering retiring soon, remember that the QRTA is one way to join colleagues in social and interesting events. We have enjoyed a variety of activities over the years: a talk about a family renovating an old home and finding a mystery under the floorboards, a guided tour of the backstage details of QPAC, and a guided tour of the Roma Street Gardens.
The Events Committee has arranged monthly activities from March to December. Details of these can be found in the monthly newsletter. In June, we are going to the Banyo Car Museum to check out their collection of sports cars and then share our knowledge over a cup of coffee at the cafe. If you would like to join us, please reply by sending your name and contact address to qrtaevents@qtu.as.
Hoping to see many new members at our activities, as it is essential that we socialise and continue to learn.
