Our 2018 Teacher Workload Survey shows more than 50% of participants stated reducing digital communication load would help to manage workload. This is consistent with QTU member comments from the commencement of our workload reduction campaign.
The Queensland government has the power to switch off email servers out of hours and, to exercise the right-to-disconnect and preserve work-life balance, there are companies in Europe where this occurs. In the absence of Queensland government legislation to recognise employees’ right-to-disconnect, or Department of Education policy to restore work-life balance, the QTU respects the professional autonomy of our members to make decisions about prioritizing tasks, including responding to emails. QTU members can continue to send an automated response like that recommended to celebrate Bastille Day and the right-to-disconnect.
