WWAM: managing excessive heat 7 November 2018

I am an...

Excessive heat is a real problem for Queensland schools and all of us who work and learn within them. But what can we do to tackle it?

The first step is to organise a meeting to discuss the issues and come up with a strategy to keep staff and students comfortable and safe during a heatwave. This should be done at a whole school level to ensure all members have input into the school strategy.

The meeting should consider:

  • which activities need to be modified or suspended
  • what to replace these activities with
  • whether essential activities can be relocated to a cool area
  • how to prioritise access to cooler areas
  • other ways of keeping cool and safe
  • how to communicate the strategy to parents.

After the meeting, why not let the QTU know what you came up with or the positive things that are already happening in your workplace in relation to managing extreme heat?

This week is also the last week for the climate control census. Please don’t forget to complete the survey (www.qtu.asn.au/climatecontrolsurvey2018) so that we can use the evidence to campaign for resources to address climate control.
