Further to the Workload Wednesday post on break entitlements - 1 Sep 2021 (please see the link at the bottom of this post), many schools are looking at renewing their timetables for next year and this may involve discussion about meal break start and finish times.
Meal breaks must at a minimum be 30 minutes and a rest pause must be 10 minutes. These cannot be adjusted, even with consultation and agreement.
Classified officers have the same entitlements to meal breaks and should ensure that they are having these breaks. If these are to be at alternate meal break times to students, this should be recorded in the individual timetable of the employee. Meal breaks and rest pauses are important to ensure health and safety.
Where change is proposed, it is important to ensure the certified agreement and the award are reviewed when making any such changes, as well as making sure thorough consultation has occurred to ensure unintended consequences are minimised.
