Supply teacher shortage and your right to disconnect - 23 June 2021

Supply teacher shortage

QTU members have raised concerns about the lack of available TRACER teachers and the impact this is having on wellbeing.

The QTU have met with TRACER and DoE staff to raise concerns about the shortage of supply teachers. TRACER advise that 75% of supply teachers are refusing work. The fact that it is winter and sick workers and children must now stay home on the advice of the CHO is having a drastic impact on availability and demand.

DoE are going to develop an action plan for Term 3, looking at LRTs and DRTs. There will also be mid-year graduates available to join the TRACER pool.

Right to disconnect

With Term 2 ending this Friday, we’re urging members to exercise their Right to Disconnect over the school holidays.

Our 2018 Teacher Workload Survey showed a majority of members felt reducing digital communication would help manage workload. We continue to advocate for the Queensland government to follow the lead of some European countries and formally pass legislation that recognises employees right to disconnect outside of hours.

In the absence of such a move, we respect our members’ professional autonomy and suggest you consider setting an out of office response on your @eq.edu.au email account.
