Investing in the future of education
Queensland Teachers' Journal, Vol 128 No 7, 29 September 2023, page no. 4
Ensuring a successful future for Queensland state schools will take commitment.
There needs to be genuine investment in the transformative power of state education through the design and resourcing of a socially and financially just model tailored specifically for our diverse contexts.
A statewide process of QTU consultation is underway, engaging a broad range of members within and across regions, school contexts, sectors, and geographic locations. It has been several decades since a formal review of a statewide resourcing model has occurred, and the educational landscape has evolved significantly since then.
The Comprehensive Review of School Resourcing (CRoSR) aims to examine the current resourcing model and processes and make them responsive to change, including:
- ensuring they more adequately meet the demands of 21st Century educational environments and the diversity of school contexts and needs
- achieving equity, structure, and clarity of allocative resourcing
- achieving clarity of the nature and breadth of school-based roles.
To date, member feedback has focused on the need for clarity and re-alignment. The current resourcing model is not fit for purpose. It simply has not kept pace with expanding agendas and increasing expectations (teaching and non-teaching) of schools, the changing social and economic contexts that are impacting schools, or the introduction of discreet digital operational platforms.
The QTU is preparing an additional submission, with a view to providing greater depth and detail based on the breadth of member feedback. It will focus on four key areas:
- Investing in 21st Century education
- Investing in clarity in equity
- Investing in engagement and wellbeing
- Investing in our workforce.
At the core of this submission is a focus on achieving clarity and alignment of resourcing to meet the current needs of our diverse school environments. We know that teachers and school leaders must see not only the benefits of a long-term restructure of school funding models, but also short-term solutions that have immediate positive impact in our schools.
