Labour Day 2023
Queensland Teachers' Journal, Vol 128 No 4, 9 June 2023, page no.8
Labour Day 2023 was, quite simply, a stunner. Right across the state, members gathered under blue-sky days, flanked by friends, family, and a number of well-groomed dogs.
It wasn’t surprising that the 2023 Labour Day T-shirts were quickly snapped up. There was much excitement as people took in 2023’s one-of-a-kind design, complete with QTU Executive member Amanda Power’s iconic artwork incorporated between the words of 2023’s theme: Voice. Treaty. Truth. In Brisbane, there were none left when it was time to march, a great sign that our people were once again out in force, united, this time in record numbers.
There were many first-time marchers this year, people who had been encouraged to come along and see what it was all about. When they took that step, they were warmly welcomed into the Labour Day tradition, no doubt being told: “Come along again next year!”
Indeed, right across the state, members turned up for Labour Day 2023. Some gatherings were large, some were small, but the spirit was evident no matter the number of feet, wheels, or paws on the ground.
As we always say, Labour Day means many things to different people. For some, it’s about supporting a theme that they feel strongly about. That was certainly the case this year, when all unions displayed their commitment to the Yes23 campaign. For other members, it is about connection with colleagues. And some come seeking solidarity and strength at a tough time. And we cannot ignore the legacy that we celebrate each and every year – those previous generations of workers whose struggles have made our lives at work and at home so much better. Whatever the reason, it is always a joyful day.
As the sun went down over this year’s huge Brisbane turn out and the last of our union comrades were ushered out of the Showgrounds, all that was left was a feeling of pride and the beginning of ideas for next year’s Labour Day weekend. What can we do better? What else could we try? Coats for the dogs? Yes! Black T-shirts again? Of course! This QTU officer loves the chance to make Labour Day Weekend the best it can be for our members across Queensland.
See you in 2024!
