The 2025 Australian Education Union (AEU) National TAFE Council (NTC) AGM, originally scheduled for the Easter break, took place in September.
The decision was taken to combine the AGM with the annual National TAFE Day celebrations on 3 September, including the announcement of the winner of the TAFE National Photography Competition. Held in Parliament House Canberra, the associated events offered the perfect opportunity to share the powerful impact that TAFE has on people’s lives with federal decision makers.
The members of the AEU NTC and the National TAFE Council Executive (NTCE) participated in the AGM on 2 September, and the next day proceeded to Federal Parliament to lobby federal politicians.
The Queensland delegation consisted of Queensland NTCE member David Terauds (pictured right, with Minister for Skills and Training, Andrew Giles)and NTC delegates Tanya Noreen and Madonna Johansen, with QTU Vice-President Leah Olsson as an observer.
The Queensland delegation had the opportunity to talk with recently elected MPs from across the state, including Emma Comer MP (Petrie), Ali France MP (Dickson), Julie-Ann Campbell MP (Moreton), and Matt Smith MP (Leichhardt). Constructive and supportive conversations were held and undertakings given to meet with delegations of members.
Additionally, the combined AEU delegation met with the ALP caucus and was addressed by Minister Giles, who reiterated the federal government’s commitment to rebuilding the national training system with TAFE at its heart.
The NTCE and AEU senior leadership also met with Senator Mehreen Faruqi, Greens education and training spokesperson, who emphasised the party's commitment to TAFE and public education.
