Welcoming our 3,300 newest QTU members
Queensland Teachers' Journal, Vol 130 No 7, 3 October 2025, page no 11.
Since the beginning of June, we’ve proudly welcomed more than 3,300 new members to the Queensland Teachers’ Union. Whether you’re joining for the first time or returning to support the EB11 campaign, we’re excited to welcome you and have you with us.
Our new members represent every sector, every level of experience, and every corner of our state — and each one strengthens our collective voice.
QTU membership isn’t just something you sign up for or purchase — it’s about becoming part of a powerful collective. With more than 50,000 members standing together, you’re joining a movement focused on improving your working life and championing public education.
This year marked a significant moment: our first 24-hour stoppage in 16 years. It was a powerful show of solidarity and action, and now we have the opportunity to build on that momentum. Let’s make sure every new member feels welcomed, supported, and inspired to be part of our shared journey.
While advocating for better salaries and working conditions is at the heart of what we do, QTU membership offers so much more. It’s a chance to connect through our vibrant branch network, participate in democratic decision-making, and grow your understanding of the policies and conditions that shape your work. It’s not just rewarding — it’s empowering.
The QTU also offers an extensive suite of member services, including access to the amazing Queensland Teachers’ Assist Desk (QTAD) team, who each day provide members with expert information and advice, backed up by our industrial, member services and welfare officers. We also have a professional library that members can access to assist with research and professional reading.
Our Regional Organiser team, based across the state in offices from Cairns to the Gold Coast, spend every day visiting workplaces and engaging with members on a range of industrial and professional matters. If your Organiser is visiting your workplace, make some time to meet with them and introduce yourself.
Our Organiser team also help members run local and regional campaigns, which in the past have addressed issues like making workplaces safer, improving school resourcing and facilities, and teacher accommodation.
The QTU also offers members professional development through Queensland Education Support and Training (QuEST) and industrial relations training through the Queensland Teachers’ Education Centre (QTEC), with courses offered face-to-face statewide and online.
But the real power of the QTU sits with our extensive network of Workplace Union Representatives, who volunteer their own time to support members at the workplace level, including representing them in consultation and helping them through the many challenging circumstances our profession can produce. If you are new to the QTU or you know someone who has recently joined, then encourage them to meet their Workplace Representative.
The cherry on top of this QTU pile is our member legal assistance scheme, which is second to none. It provides significant protection and support for members when they are facing some of the most challenging circumstances in their career.
We’re proud to continue the legacy of thousands of QTU members who’ve stood together over the past 136 years. If you’re new to the Union — or just starting to explore what QTU membership can offer — now is the perfect time to get involved. Engage with your Union, connect with your colleagues, and make the most of the strength, support and opportunities that come with being part of the QTU.
