The Heart of TAFE photography competition
Queensland Teachers' Journal, Vol 130 No 7, 3 October 2025, page no 16.
The Heart of TAFE photography competition is an opportunity to showcase nationally the impact that TAFE has on students.
Each state selects a winner from the submissions received from their region, with the state winner receiving a prize of $1,000 and an invitation to Canberra for the announcement of the national winner.
This year, Kyla Merielle Dagsaan from Pimlico campus in Townsville won the Queensland prize with her photo “La Rose Noir Patisserie Competition”. Having commenced studies as an industrial engineering student she changed careers and is now undertaking kitchen management and hospitality management. Her image celebrates Kyla’s success in winning first place in a patisserie competition.
The Queensland runner up was “Learning Lost Skills” by Sean Guastavino, which shows Sean caulking, or driving hemp or cotton between boat planks to make the vessel watertight.
The national winner was announced on National TAFE Day on 3 September by the Federal Minister for Skills and Training, Andrew Giles, who was one of the judges for 2025. Western Australia took the national honours this year with an almost abstract image, “The Heart of PhilomathÄ“s”, taken by Cert IV laboratory studies student Valerie Walker. Her image captures the creation of a ‘lava lamp’ using fluoroescein, a compound that fluoresces under UV light. Valerie received a prize of $5,000.
