Strengthening our democracy
The QTU prides itself on being a democratic organisation. Throughout the Union’s more than 135-year life, its members have freely chosen and committed to maintaining and renewing its democratic structure.
With the aim of further strengthening this legacy, 2026 sees the roll out of new QTU position holder development training. This development day is designed to provide position holders with the skills, support, and confidence to enhance the QTU’s democracy through high-level understanding and effective use of their position, meeting procedures, motions, and debate.
The ultimate goal is to strengthen the voice of members and their representation through an in-depth examination of:
- QTU democratic structures
- QTU position descriptions
- rules of QTU meetings – standing orders
- writing motions
- why we debate and how to do it.
This training course is designed for QTU position holders, Union Reps, branch position holders, Area Council Reps, State Council Reps, Women’s Contacts and First Nations Contacts.
What participants are saying about the position holder development course
“As a first time area council member, it was extremely helpful and has helped me better understand my role in the branch and area council.”
“The opportunity to learn about how the QTU operates and get a clear understanding of writing and debating of motions was so beneficial.”
“I wish I’d had the opportunity to do this training years ago!”
“Totally recommend this course!”
Strengthening Union Rep currency
Not only is it essential for Union Reps to participate in training for personal and professional growth and currency, it is also an excellent opportunity to access up-to-date information, build networks, and enjoy camaraderie with fellow participants. Union Reps are also reminded that participation in QTEC courses — face to face or online — is a prerequisite for invitation to the Union Reps Conference each year.
Industrial relations education leave
Industrial relations education (IRE) leave is an award entitlement to paid time off (up to five working days per calendar year) for attendance at Union training to acquire knowledge and competencies in consultative structures and in performing a representative role. For more information on IRE leave, please see the information brochure section of the QTU website.
