QTU Union Reps Conference 2026
Queensland Teachers' Journal, Vol 131 No 2, 2 April 2026, page no 14.
More than 350 Workplace Union Representatives gathered in Brisbane on 6 March for the annual QTU Union Reps Conference.
The conference continues to play a crucial role in strengthening the Union’s capacity to advocate for Queensland teachers, school leaders and TAFE educators. With Reps from every corner of the state attending, it has incredible reach, impacting workplaces and branches all over Queensland. By fostering connection, building professional knowledge, and supporting the wellbeing of those who carry out the essential work of representation, the conference reinforces the core values of the Queensland Teachers’ Union. The atmosphere – energised, inclusive, supportive, and grounded in shared purpose – reflects the strength and unity of our membership.
The conference plays a vital role in enhancing the effectiveness of Workplace Reps and building the broader capacity of the QTU to respond to the challenges facing members. It offers a dedicated space for meaningful engagement, enabling Reps to share experiences, collaborate strategically, and reinforce the collective identity of the Union.
Our Union Representatives are central to safeguarding professional rights, advocating for improved working conditions, and amplifying the collective voice of teachers and school leaders. While much of this work occurs within individual workplaces, its impact is significantly strengthened when representatives come together. The Union Reps Conference provides the ideal environment for this collaboration, supporting knowledge exchange, professional learning, solidarity building, and coordinated action.
Acting General Secretary Brendan Crotty opened the conference with a session on QTU Priorities and Arbitration: Winning With and For Members – Growing Our Union, setting both the tone and direction for the day. Deputy General Secretary Leah Mertens hosted the event, guiding us through a range of sessions, including:
- Being an assertive professional in 2026 – Kelly Creedon (Acting Research Officer, Professional Issues) and Josh Cleary (Honorary Vice-President)
- President’s address: Advancing our profession and workplaces – Cresta Richardson (President)
- Safe and healthy work – Paige Bousen (Acting Deputy General Secretary), Kate Kermode (Industrial Officer), and Jodie McFadden (Acting Organiser, Workplace Health and Safety)
- Reclaim special education – Chris Shevelling (Assistant Secretary, Industrial and Legal) and Chris Smith (Project Officer – Arbitration)
- Sustainable activism – Leah Olsson (Vice-President) and Meegan Jackson (Organiser, Sunshine Coast – although Meegan was unwell on the day, her significant contribution to the design and planning of the session was acknowledged).
If you are a Union Rep interested in receiving an invitation to the 2027 conference, ensure that you participate in QTEC training sessions in-person or online during 2026, and identify your interest in a conversation with your Organiser.
