That’s it for another year!
Queensland Teachers' Journal, Vol 131 No 3, 22 May 2026, page no.10
For the QTU, Labour Day is something that stretches right out across this beautiful state. Events big and small embrace far-flung places, regional towns, and the centre of Brisbane.
In these gatherings each year, we catch up with members of our own Union, but also with nurses, transport workers, teacher aides, engineers, retail workers, plumbers, administrators, midwives, electricians, and so many other workers who know that in whatever union we belong, we are stronger together. Labour Day is always a chance to stand shoulder to shoulder and acknowledge our proud collective history.
The QTU sincerely thanks the members, staff and officers, friends, and families who turned up for another great Labour Day in 2026. Whether you were holding a sign, serving food, frying up sausages, carting water, marshalling members, holding a loudhailer, loading a vehicle, hosting dinners, sending in photos, or even just attending an event to be part of who we are as a Union, it all mattered. Every part you played added to what we always hope our members will experience — celebration, connection, and solidarity.
QTU member Maika Bailey put it like this: “I’m here on Labour Day because every right we have was fought for, not handed over. Union work isn’t easy—it’s long, it’s tough, and sometimes it asks more than you think you’ve got. But days like this remind me of why it matters… they fill my cup, reconnect me to the people that stand up and fight for what is fair, and enable me to celebrate how far we’ve come and consider what work still lies ahead.”
Labour Day is for our members, wherever they are. See you next year!
