How will payday super affect me?
Queensland Teachers' Journal, Vol 131 No 4, 26 June 2026, page no.27
You may have heard that 1 July saw the introduction of payday super, which changes the way employers have to pay their employees’ super guarantee.
The new rules mean that employers must:
- pay employees their super guarantee for each payday (instead of quarterly)
- calculate super based on an employee’s qualifying earnings, which is a new term that brings together ordinary time earnings and other payments.
But what does that mean for you as a state school or TAFE educator? QSuper/ART has the answers.
How payday super works
As a Queensland Government employee, you won’t see much change. That’s because for decades, the Queensland Government has been leading the way in improving retirement outcomes by paying your super with each pay cycle.
From 1 July, the new payday super rules mean all employers — big and small — will have to do this.
When will my super contribution go into my account?
As a Queensland Government employee, your super contributions are already paid with each pay cycle. It’s important to note that when contributions are processed, the money doesn’t hit your super fund account straight away – there is a processing period between payday and the money landing in your super account. This will remain the case when payday super is introduced.
What else do I need to know?
As a Queensland Government employee, you won’t see any major adjustments from 1 July. But it’s worth checking the following:
- Are your details are up to date? For example, the name you provide your employer should also align with your proof of identity documents (e.g. passport, driver’s licence). Check your employer has your details recorded accurately and is paying super into the fund you want. Let your employer know if anything’s changed.
- Do you have more than one super account? If you’ve had more than one job, you might have more than one super fund. Having multiple accounts could mean paying extra fees. Learn more about consolidating your super. Before you consolidate, think about whether it’s right for you. You could lose access to benefits such as insurance or pension options, and you need to consider tax implications.
