Weipa Parkrun takeover
Queensland Teachers' Journal, Vol 131 No 4, 26 June 2026, page no.6
In June, I was fortunate to travel to Weipa with QTU Vice-President Leah Olsson for the QTU’s annual Parkrun takeover as part of this year’s Labour Day celebrations.
What began as a simple community event was a wonderful demonstration of the strength and spirit of our Union, with more than 40 members, family members and friends coming together to participate.
A sincere thank you to the Weipa members for their warm hospitality and the incredible effort they put into making the event such a success. It was fantastic to see members from across the community connecting, sharing stories, and celebrating the values that unite us as trade unionists.
One of the most rewarding aspects of remote service is the friendships that are formed along the way. The sense of community, support, and camaraderie that develops in remote locations is something truly special, and the Weipa Parkrun was a great reminder of that. Events like these strengthen the bonds between members and showcase the best of our union movement.
I left Weipa feeling inspired and grateful, and I am already looking forward to returning next year.
