Resource kit marks National Apology
Queensland Teachers' Journal, Vol 129 No 1, 16 February, page no. 15
On 13 February 2008, Prime Minister Kevin Rudd delivered a National Apology to Australia’s Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples for the injustices of past government policies, including the Stolen Generations.
The term Stolen Generations refers to a period in Australian history from the mid-1800s to 1970s during which First Nations children were removed from their families through government policies. This resulted in loss of Language, Culture, families and Country, and resulted in intergenerational trauma for many First Nations peoples.
In the spirit of truth-telling in classrooms, it’s important to include and teach about the Stolen Generations in an accurate, age-appropriate way. While there are plenty of books, films and songs out there, the Healing Foundation has recently released a Stolen Generations resource kit.
The Healing Foundation is a national Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander organisation that provides a platform to amplify the voices and lived experience of Stolen Generations survivors and their families.
The resource kit includes resources for prep to year 12 that centre around the Stolen Generations. It was created at the request of Stolen Generations survivors and developed by First Nations curriculum developers.
