Learning about times gone by
Queensland Teachers' Journal, Vol 130 No 2, 11 April 2025, page no 32.
Socialising is necessary as we age.
There is nothing like a belly laugh and friendly talk with friends and relatives, as research has shown that getting out with friends stimulates us both physically and emotionally. This is one reason that the Queensland Retired Teachers Association continues to encourage retired teachers to join with others and learn more about the area we live in, whether it be Brisbane or other parts of our great state.
The Events Committee organises great activities that help retirees to socialise and learn more about different subjects. These are advertised in the monthly newsletter.
If you have not joined in with the QRTA’s activities yet, please keep in touch and join the friendly members at the next outing.
It is interesting to learn about our own area or to go travelling and learn more about the world we live in. Some of us have been fortunate enough to have travelled overseas, while others are able to use video and literature to gain knowledge of places near and far.
Family history is another interesting area, enabling us to access information about our ancestors and how and why they came to live in this country. We now have technology to help us understand more about our families. Many of us failed to ask our families questions about their lives in years gone by and now have begun research to find the answers and learn more.
The Queensland Genealogy Society is one of the many organisations which can help you to find out about times past. If you are interested, this is one way to solve history puzzles and meet like-minded researchers.
If you are considering retiring soon, remember that the QRTA is one way to join colleagues in social and interesting events. Recently, we enjoyed a talk about a family renovating an old home. Many of us have done this, but in days gone by the materials often needed to be replaced. I wonder what was found under your lino? I remember finding old newspapers with lots of history and old photos of Brisbane.
The Events Committee has arranged monthly activities from March to December. Details of these can be found in the monthly newsletter. In April we are going on a guided tour of the Queensland Police Museum and then socialising over a cup of coffee at the Iconic Coffee shop in George Street. If you would like to join us, please reply by sending your name and contact address to qrtaevents@qtu.asn.au
Hoping to see many new members at our activities, as it is essential that we socialise and continue to learn.
