The secret ingredient for a thriving school: Why every school needs a strong music program
Queensland Teachers' Journal, Vol 130 No 2, 11 April 2025, page no 27.
Today’s schools face increasing pressure to improve student wellbeing, academic outcomes, and community engagement. But what if there was one powerful tool to address all these challenges at once?
Music is that tool. A well-supported music program − providing music for every child every week − does more than benefit those who play an instrument or sing in the choir; it transforms the entire school culture. Music brings people together, enhances learning, and fosters a sense of belonging that extends far beyond the classroom.
Music builds school culture and community
A strong music program forms the backbone of a vibrant school environment. It unites the entire community − from school assemblies and special events to concerts, graduation ceremonies, and cultural celebrations. Schools with thriving music programs often observe that:
- students develop pride in their school and a shared identity
- families become more engaged through performances and events
- the school gains a stronger public reputation, attracting new enrolments.
Music is not just a subject, it is the soundtrack of school life, connecting students, teachers, and families in ways no other discipline can.
Music supports student wellbeing
Music is a powerful tool for mental health. It offers an outlet for self-expression, reduces stress, and fosters a sense of achievement. Research shows that students who participate in music:
- experience lower levels of anxiety and stress
- develop greater resilience and emotional intelligence
- build strong social connections through shared musical experiences
- gain confidence and self-esteem from performing and collaborating.
In an era in which student wellbeing is a top priority, music should be seen as an essential part of the solution, not merely an optional extra.
Cognitive benefits and academic achievement
Music doesn’t just make students feel good, it sharpens their thinking. A wealth of research highlights the connection between music education and cognitive development. Students involved in music often display:
- stronger memory, focus, and problem-solving skills
- enhanced language and literacy development
- greater mathematical and spatial awareness
- improved executive functioning, including self-discipline and perseverance.
Music trains the brain in ways that support learning across all subjects, making it a key player in academic success.
Music is for every student
Unlike competitive sports or academic contests, music is truly inclusive. Every student, regardless of ability, background, or learning challenges, can find a place in music. It:
- offers an alternative pathway to success for those who may struggle in traditional subjects
- supports students with special needs by providing structure, expression, and connection
- celebrates diversity and cultural expression, giving students a platform to share their heritage.
A strong music program ensures that every child has a voice in school life, both literally and figuratively.
The fight to keep music in schools
Despite its proven benefits, music education is under threat in many parts of the world. Curriculum pressures have led many schools to reduce or eliminate music programs altogether.
This is where our QTU subcommittee, the Primary Music Specific Interest Group (PMSIG), steps in. We advocate for Music for every child every week, working to reinstate lost music programs and preserve those that remain. Our PMSIG members, representing areas from all across the state, are taking every possible action to further our cause.
Although our campaign has taken years of effort, it is making a positive impact, and we have no intention of giving up on this worthy goal. Schools that have embraced revitalised music programs report happier students, stronger engagement, and a more connected school community. We believe every school deserves this opportunity.
Music is more than just a subject; it is the heart of a thriving school. It fosters wellbeing, boosts academic performance, and unites the school community in ways no other discipline can.
If you want to create a school in which students thrive, families engage, and learning is joyful, the solution is clear: invest in music. After all, the music room is “the beating heart of the school”.
