Labour Day 2024
Queensland Teachers' Journal, Vol 129 No 2, 28 March 2024, page 18.
Labour Day planning is well underway and the QTU invites you to get along to an event if you can. In this 135th year of QTU achievements, we are looking forward to a huge weekend of members coming together across the state between 4 and 6 May.
The QTU will be leading the march in all regional celebrations, an acknowledgement of this 135th year of our Union. Organisers are hoping for big numbers on the day as we lead those marches. The Brisbane parade will also see the QTU right near the front of proceedings (second in the march), which will be a new experience for many regular attendees who are used to starting a bit further back in the field. Our new QTU shirts will be on hand too, although they are top secret until Labour Day!
This year, the Queensland Council of Unions, to which we are affiliated, has determined that the 2024 Labour Day theme will be “Fighting for Queenslanders”. When we consider the 135 years of our own Union’s history, this is fitting indeed, and cause for a big turnout.
Labour Day is an opportunity to come together in celebration. For those heading to a march, see if there are others who might like to join you. Perhaps they are new to your school or workplace, perhaps they are not familiar with this annual tradition of ours. Why not bring a family member too? After all, the work of unions is about making a better and safer life for everyone.
Remember, we march to celebrate the contribution that workers make to society more broadly. We point to the ongoing struggles that our diverse members face. We march in solidarity and to show Queenslanders the strength and commitment of our union movement.
We want you, your colleagues, your family, and friends to join us right across the state for a celebration and acknowledgement of 135 years of QTU achievements.
