Compassionate Transfers
In 2022 the department implemented a new guideline (link to Guideline for the assessment of compassionate circumstances) and process for compassionate transfers after consultation with the QTU.
Teachers who believe they may be eligible to lodge a compassionate transfer should read the guideline carefully. In some cases, the teacher after discussing their situation with their principal, may be able to obtain a transfer without a compassionate application being lodged e.g., to a nearby school. The QTU may be able to assist in facilitating such a transfer. In 2022 the department has introduced a continuous, ongoing transfer process and requested transfer applications can be lodged at any time and will considered when they are lodged. This does not mean all applicants will receive a requested transfer shortly after lodging an application.
If the compassionate circumstances require a change in residence and region usually a compassionate application will need to be completed and lodged. The department has introduced a compassionate application form (link) in 2022. In most cases applicants will have to attach documentary evidence to their application.
The applications are considered by a panel on which the QTU is represented. Members who believe they may need to lodge a compassionate transfer application should contact the QTU for further information and advice.
Examples of Compassionate Circumstances:
1. A teacher or spouse or child has a serious medical condition that can only be treated in certain parts of the state.
2. A teacher’s spouse has received a promotion to a school leadership position in another region.
Examples of circumstances that may not be considered compassionate:
1. A teacher’s spouse works in the private sector and decides to accept a job in Noosa. The teacher will not be granted a compassionate transfer to move to the sunshine coast geographic area unless she or he has the transfer points to support a requested transfer.
2. A teacher or spouse or children need to visit medical specialists once or twice a year in SE Queensland. These visits could be scheduled in the school holidays and the teacher would not have to be transferred to the SE of the State unless they were eligible for a requested transfer and had the necessary points.
