TO: QTU MEMBERS
Working for members
The QTU works for members by negotiating outcomes to complex industrial and professional issues and by representing the profession on numerous committees and key stakeholder groups.
State Council
QTU State Council met recently to discuss relevant issues facing the teaching profession.
At March Council, delegates rejected any use by the department of student disciplinary absences (SDA) as a measure of success and key performance indicator for schools, principals, school supervisors and regional directors as a key part of the Equity and Excellence Strategy.
Delegates condemned the department for the lack of appropriate resourcing for release time to support Version 9 of the Australian Curriculum, and supported a work ban on Student Code of Conduct Policy and Procedures until adequate support, direction and resourcing is offered for realistic alternatives to suspension.
QTU senior officers have met with the department and are urgently recommending action on these matters. Members of the QTU Executive are meeting today to consider the next steps.
Attraction and retention
An update was provided to Council on the progress of negotiations for improved attraction and retention initiatives for three schools whose members are at stage 3 of the dispute resolution process. Another eleven schools are at different stages of the process. A workshop was held on 28 February to explore initiatives for each of the schools. The QTU continues to meet fortnightly with the department to reach an outcome that is acceptable for members in these and other schools.
QTU quarterly member survey - have your say today!
The QTU’s member survey for Term 1 is now open. Please take a moment to fill it in and have your say on the important issues affecting our Union. It only takes a few minutes.
Survey responses are completely anonymous.
This survey is one of several ways members can have their say. You can also help guide the direction of our Union though our democratic structures, including via branch meetings, State Council and Executive.
Your voice is important to us. Please take the survey here: https://www.qtu.asn.au/qtu-member-survey-2024
AEU State of Our Schools 2024 survey
With the future funding of every state school being decided this year, it is vital that we have accurate information about workloads, resourcing, and teacher shortages.
That is why we are asking you to complete the AEU’s national State of our Schools 2024 survey.
It is your chance to tell the AEU what you think and what you are experiencing in your school.
The survey will take about 10 minutes to complete, and you can go in the draw to win a new iPad Pro.
We know you are busier than ever, but the AEU needs as many members as possible to complete the survey to give it information from every part of the nation.
If you are having trouble with the link, you can copy and paste the address below into your browser:

Final call – registrations closing soon on United Leadership Conference!
The forthcoming QTU United Leadership Conference will be held over two days from 25-26 March at the Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre, South Brisbane.
The conference focuses on both the professional and industrial aspects of leadership and will provide valuable information and insights for members in leadership positions. Information regarding keynote speakers, conference sessions and workshops can be found on the Education Leaders Conference (https://www.qtu.asn.au/elc) page.
Come and hear the latest information from a range of guest speakers, network with colleagues, and have your say on a range of current issues impacting upon school leaders. Conference attendees are also invited to join us for a fringe event at BCEC between 7.30 and 8.30am on Tuesday 26 March to provide feedback on the QTU’s submission to the review of the Education (General Provisions) Act (EGPA).
Additionally, the department has approved this event as professional development for school leaders – the correspondence can be found here (https://www.qtu.asn.au/elc). This means there is no need for attendees to take IRE leave.
